Here in the south, most everyone has an asphalt shingle roof. Maintenance for a roof isn’t usually on Atlanta’s weekly, monthly, yearly, or whenever list. Still, asphalt shingles become worn and damaged by the weather and debris. At least a yearly inspection is needed especially after the Georgia spring and early summer thunder storms which could have brought hail and wind damage.
Clear all Roof Debris
- Leaves, dirt, trash, and other material can build up and cause damming and wet spots. Damming can force water underneath the shingles into the decking, create a concentrated flow eroding the shingles more quickly, and drive water into unprotected areas. Keeping your roof clean of debris will prevent extra water deterioration.
- Moss and algae may look like damage but it isn’t. The black or brown streaks form in humid rich environments like the south on the north facing slopes of the roof. While unsightly and making the roof look old, algae can be beneficial. The waxy build up does provide an additional barrier from the elements. Still, it creates a hazard to anyone traversing the roof. Zinc or lead control strips can clean up the moss and algae.
Any Damage Should Be Dealt With Immediately
- Any flashing should be rust, hole, and dent free. If not, it would be good to replace it. No metal on the roof should be unpainted. Sealants and caulking should be crack free or touch up or replacement might be needed. Damaged shingles should be replaced while loose shingles should be secured with roofing cement. Chimney and parapet mortar should be checked for weather erosion. Over hanging trees should have limbs cut back to minimize debris and likelihood of falling on the roof.
- A little maintenance will go a long way and keeps your home leak free. Checking your roof is the best and easiest way to catch damage before it makes its way into your Atlanta home. Once in the home it can cause far more severe problems and create mold. Some might prefer to leave the maintenance to Atlanta Roofing Contractors, but anyone can maintain and inspect their storm damaged roof with just some knowledge and a ladder.
